Biotricity Medical Options Biogenerator Technology from CU

The University of Colorado and Biotricity Medical Inc executed an option agreement pertaining to the development of implantable biogenerators. These biogenerators, based on research from the lab of Dr. Simon Rock Levinson at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, afford the potential to provide a long-term power supply to implanted medical devices such as pacemakers and insulin pumps. With current technology, repeated procedures are necessary to replace the power. The company’s first planned product is the EpiVolt, an implantable biogenerator which is made of living electricity-generating cells that use the body’s chemicals and processes to create power. The EpiVolt, which will be significantly smaller than many of the batteries it will replace, has the potential to power numerous implanted devices including pacemakers, insulin pumps, cochlear implants, and vagal nerve stimulators. Biotricity is headquartered in Hopkinton, Massachusetts and led by Dr. Stephen Rathmill; the company maintains a presence in Aurora, Colorado where Levinson serves as Chief Scientific Officer.
